Air Freight vs Sea Freight from China: Which Should You Choose?

Air Freight vs Sea Freight from China

Choose air freight for small, urgent, or high-value goods (3–7 days). Choose sea freight for large or heavy loads where price matters more than speed (about 20–30 days).

When you import from China, one of the first choices is how to ship. You can send your cargo by air or by sea. Both work well, but they suit different needs. Picking the wrong one can cost you money or time.

This guide keeps it simple. We look at speed, cost, and cargo size, so you can choose with confidence.

Air freight: fast but pricier

Air freight is the quick option. Most shipments from China land in three to seven days. That speed is great when stock is running low or the goods are valuable.

  • Best for urgent orders β€” when you cannot wait weeks, a plane gets it there fast.
  • Best for small, light cargo β€” under about 200 kg, air is often the smart pick.
  • Best for high value β€” less time in transit means less risk for costly goods.

The trade-off is price. Airlines charge by weight or size, whichever is bigger, so heavy cargo gets expensive fast.

Sea freight: cheap but slow

Sea freight is the low-cost option for bigger loads. From China to Bangladesh it takes about 20 to 30 days port to port. For large orders, the savings are huge.

You can ship a shared container (LCL) or a full one (FCL). LCL is good for a few pallets. FCL is best once you fill most of a container.

A simple rule to decide

If your cargo is small and you need it now, fly it. If it is big or heavy and you can plan ahead, ship it by sea. Many importers do both β€” air for fast-moving items, sea for the bulk. We help you split the load the cheap way.

Frequently asked questions

Is air freight always faster than sea?

Yes. Air takes days while sea takes weeks. The gap is the main reason to pay more for air.

At what weight does sea freight get cheaper?

As a rough guide, once you pass a few hundred kilos, sea usually wins on price. We compare both for your exact cargo.

Can I combine air and sea in one order?

Yes. We often fly a small urgent part and ship the rest by sea to save money.
